Metallurgical Grade Fluorspar

Named for its use as a flux in metallurgical processes, particularly steel making, metallurgical grade fluorspar or metspar normally consists of sand, gravel, or larger lumps that are in an “as mined” state with minimal additional upgrading beyond gravitimetric and manual sorting, crushing, screening, and washing.  Long thought of as “lower quality,” due to the limited processing it undergoes, metallurgical grade fluorspar has actually become a premium product as the number of mines whose ore bodies can easily yield a naturally occurring product with 80-95% CaF2 has dwindled.
